How Much Is Cindy McCain's $300,000 Outfit Really Worth?

Last week, the Vanity Fair fashion department priced out the ensemble Cindy McCain wore to the Republican National Convention. Far be it from those of us at V.F. to criticize people for buying fancy clothes (you've met our advertisers, right?), but even we were astonished when the estimate came back: thanks to a pair of earrings our expert valued at roughly $280,000, the prospective First Lady's get-up appeared was assessed at approximately $300,000!

That got us thinking: what does $300,000 mean to Americans who don't have the luxury of inheriting a gargantuan beer fortune?

To Cindy McCain, $300,000 is the price of an outfit.

To most Americans, $300,000 buys ...

... one and a half houses, given the national median home price of $206,500.

... a year's worth of health care for 750 people.

... the full array of back-to-school supplies and clothes for 500 kids.

... enough gas to drive cross-country 543 times.

... 365 round-trip flights from Washington, D.C., to Anchorage, Alaska. (John McCain should have splurged on at least one.)

... a three-course steak dinner (at Mat-su Resort) and a movie ticket (for the Mat-su Cinema) for every man, woman, and child in Wasilla, Alaska.

... enough money for three Troopergate investigations.

Why does it matter how she spends HER money. It's hers. She and her parents worked hard for it and because of that she can live a nice lifestyle. Lets not forget the $4 million Obama made ladst year from his book sales. Figure out how much that can buy.

It's part of the package ... McCain wants to lead a country in which the vast majority of people have common everyday problems to worry about, like gas, healthcare, retirement, college. Yet he doesn't even know how many houses he owns and he thinks the economy is just fine. He even quipped that you're middleclass if you have less than $5 million.

BTW, I'm actually a bit of a Cindy fan. I love the charity work she has done and the fact that she has a mother-son drifting team. That's pretty cool.

The Mccain houses thing can be argued later. But what you have to remember is that Cindy is not running for office. Also, its noty like she is greedy. You even admit the good she has done. Also, with Obamas' multi-million dollar income he is in the same bracket as the Mccains'. I'm bet Michelle Obamas' dress was pretty expensive too. Maybe not $300,000 but still a lot.

I'm pretty sure I have a slide deck that you created about the "true Barack Hussein Obama" in which you take issue with Michelle and call Barack an elitist.

Well when someone says that they are not proud of america and want to be the first lady that is a problem. Second my point is that you go after McCain because he is wealthy and your candidate is wealthy too. Without the Rezko money Obama still lives in a multi tillion dollar house. Put that with saying people clinging to guns and religion the question can be raised if he in touch with reality.

Wrong again, on several points.

First, you completely ignore the context and subsequent clarification. In her second speech that day, she added the word "really", as in, "For the first time in my adult lifetime, I am really proud of my country," which does not preclude actually being proud.

Second, even Laura Bush knew what she meant, that she is more proud now as a result of the ground swell of interest in change.

Third, even John McCain confessed that it's sometimes hard to be proud of this country.

Fourth, I go after McCain because he is out of touch, not because he is wealthy. It just so happens that his words and deeds would seem to indicate that he is out of touch because he is wealthy.

Fifth, FactCheck has shown that Obama did not benefit from his association with Rezko. (And, if you want to do guilt by association, McCain would lose handily.)

Sixth, Obama is not in the McCain's league. Cindy is at least 10 times more wealthy and was 30 times more wealthy last year, before he earned the $4 million in book royalties.

Let's move on.
