Unanimity isn’t easy to come by in any field, but sometimes a premise is so basic that it can’t be denied. That is, unless you’re running for president of the United States.
... a proposal, first put forth by Sen. John McCain, to suspend the federal gas tax over the summer in a bid to lower prices. However, economists have universally derided the idea. Justin Wolfers of Freakonomics put out the call for an economist who supports the plan last week, and still has no takers. Meanwhile, a petition against the policy drummed up some major names in the field of economics from across the political spectrum, including Austan Goolsbee, a top adviser to Sen. Barack Obama who opposes the plan.
